Sensory overwhelm and underwhelm

Teenagers with autism may experience sensory processing differences. They can be overwhelmed by specific sensory experiences, like certain fabric textures, loud noises, or food textures, leading to sensory overload. They may also exhibit under-responsiveness to sensory stimuli, such as wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather or not reacting to pain. Additionally, they often engage in stimming, repetitive movements or noises like hand clapping, hand flapping, rocking or throat clearing.

Sleep complicates autism

Many individuals with autism experience sleep problems, including resisting bedtime, trouble falling asleep, frequent night waking, restless sleep, early morning waking and parasomnias like nightmares and sleepwalking. They may also have sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea. These issues affect 50-80% of children, half of adolescents, and nearly 80% of adults with autism.

Disordered eating adds further complexity

Autistic individuals with ARFID face severe sensory sensitivities, anxiety around food, and rigid eating routines, making treatment challenging. They are also at higher risk for anorexia and bulimia, particularly in females, due to anxiety during adolescence. Additionally, some may develop pica, eating non-food items, posing serious health risks. Early recognition and support are crucial.
