Our Assessment Process

Our assessment process is designed to be thoughtful, respectful and supportive from the very first step. By combining evidence-based diagnostic tools with deep clinical expertise, we aim to offer clarity, compassion and meaningful guidance. Whether you’re exploring answers for yourself or someone you care about, we’re here to support you with confidence and care.

Step 1: Initial Contact & Onboarding

Your journey begins with an onboarding call. This initial conversation welcomes you to the process, explains what to expect and ensures you feel supported and informed from the very beginning. It’s a chance for you to ask questions and for our team to understand your goals and reasons for seeking an assessment.

Step 2: Comprehensive Information Gathering

Our team collects important background information through questionnaires and structured tools. This includes details about your development, behaviours, lifestyle and any challenges you may be facing. This step helps us build a complete picture of your experiences to guide the diagnostic process.

Step 3: Diagnostic Interview

A trained clinician will conduct a detailed diagnostic interview, using reliable and validated methods tailored for adults. This interview explores your current traits and behaviours, including how you relate to others, manage emotions, sensory sensitivities and navigate daily life. It’s designed to uncover subtle patterns that may indicate autism.

Step 4: Understanding Your Profile

We take time to explore areas such as masking, sensory sensitivities, hyperfocus, empathy, emotional regulation and possible co-occurring conditions like ADHD. This part of the assessment helps us understand not just symptoms, but how you experience and interact with the world around you.

Step 5: Feedback & Diagnosis

Once all parts of the assessment are complete, you’ll receive a comprehensive report. During a feedback session, we will walk you through the findings, discuss your strengths and challenges and explain the diagnosis (if one is made). This report is yours to keep and can support you in seeking further help or adjustments at work or home.

Step 6: Holistic Consideration

Our assessment doesn’t stop at diagnosis. We look at the whole picture, including your coping strategies, lifestyle, mental health and areas for growth. By considering the broader context, we aim to offer you meaningful insights, not just labels.

Step 7: Personalised Recommendations & Support

Based on your results, we offer tailored suggestions to help you manage daily life more comfortably. This might include guidance on social interactions, sensory strategies, self-care routines or access to specialist support services. Our goal is to help you thrive in your own unique way.

Step 8: Your Unique Journey

Every individual is different and so is every assessment. Throughout the process, we prioritise a safe, respectful and inclusive environment. Whether you’re seeking clarity, validation, or a path to better wellbeing, this journey is all about understanding and empowering you.

What Happens After an ASD Diagnosis?

Receiving an autism diagnosis is often just the beginning of a much deeper journey toward self-understanding, support, and long-term wellbeing. At Sanctum Healthcare, we believe that what comes after the assessment is just as important as the process itself.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Report

By incorporating structured yet flexible formats, visual aids, clear and concise language and breaking down questions into manageable components, we create an environment where individuals feel comfortable and understood. This approach reduces anxiety, clarifies expectations and enables people with autism to express themselves authentically and accurately. As a result, we gain deeper insights into each person’s unique experiences, strengths and challenges, leading to more precise diagnoses and personalised support plans.

Personalised Feedback Session

A diagnosis opens the door to treatment options that are tailored to you. Whether that’s therapy, coaching, medication or simple daily tools, you’ll gain access to structured support that works with your life.

Validation

Understanding your autism can profoundly improve your quality of life by providing clarity, self-awareness and validation of your lived experiences. It helps you recognise and appreciate your unique strengths, while also identifying areas that may require targeted support or adaptation. With this deeper insight, you can develop personalised strategies for managing social interactions, sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation and everyday routines more effectively.

Connection to further support

Further support following your assessment involves tailored interventions designed around your unique needs, including specialised coaching, structured therapy programmes and practical strategies to enhance daily living skills. You may benefit from educational resources and workshops focused on improving social communication, emotional regulation, and sensory processing.

Empowerment not Dependance

Empowerment is at the core of our approach, ensuring that you feel informed, understood, and in control of your autism journey. By equipping you with comprehensive knowledge about your individual profile, we enable you to actively engage with your strengths and proactively manage areas of challenge. This process fosters greater self-confidence, independence and resilience, allowing you to effectively advocate for yourself and make decisions aligned with your personal goals and values.

Our People At Sanctum

Many of our clinicians are highly experienced specialists including psychiatrists, psychologists, physiologists, pharmacists, GPs and mental health nurses, supported by a dedicated client care team who guide you through every step of your assessment journey.

Still Wondering If This is For You

Many adults go through life sensing they’re different — socially, emotionally, or mentally — but never quite understanding why. You may have spent years adapting, masking, or feeling misunderstood.

Below, we’ve outlined some of the most common traits of autism in adults. You don’t need to relate to all of them, autism is a spectrum, and your experience is valid even if it looks different from others’. Take a look and see what resonates with you:

Do you struggle with social interactions?

Many adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience difficulties in social interactions. They may struggle with understanding social cues, maintaining eye contact and engaging in reciprocal conversations. Forming and maintaining friendships or relationships can be challenging due to these social nuances.

Common Autism Symptoms in adults-Restricted interests

Do you or your child have intense interests and become fixated on tasks?

Repetitive behaviours and intense interests are hallmark traits of ASD in adults. They might engage in repetitive movements, have specific routines that they adhere to rigidly and display intense interests in specific topics. These interests can be all-encompassing and dominate their thoughts and conversations. We call this hyper fixation.

Common Autism Symptoms - Lack of empathy

Individuals with autism don't always lack empathy

People with autism can experience empathy in diverse ways. Some may have stronger emotional empathy than cognitive empathy, a concept known as empathic disequilibrium, especially in autistic women. Empathy may also be conditional, with ease in empathising with close individuals or animals. For others, empathising requires effort due to difficulty reading social cues, while some may experience hyper-empathy, becoming overwhelmed by others' emotions. A few may identify with low empathy. Empathy in autism is complex, varying widely across individuals.
