Stacked mental-health layers

It is rarely just one thing. Anxiety, low mood, and often a difficult relationship with food or eating, each treated separately, one layer at a time, and none of it ever quite reaching the bottom.

When a brain runs unrecognised for years, the strain shows up in several places at once, and gets named as several separate problems. Treating each in isolation can help a little, but the layers keep returning because the thing they share, underneath, is never addressed as one picture.

Because each layer is real and gets its own label, the connection between them is missed, and people end up with a long history and a sense that nothing has properly worked. The layers are not separate failures. They are branches of the same root.

We look at the layers together rather than one at a time, because the pattern across them often points to the root. None of this is a diagnosis, and it does not undo the diagnoses you have. It is what we explore with you. If any of this feels heavy, including anything to do with eating, you do not have to manage it alone. Your GP can help, Beat offer eating-disorder support at beateatingdisorders.org.uk, and the Samaritans are on 116 123.
