Brilliant one day, unable to function the next, with no pattern anyone can see. Capable and chaotic at the same time, able to do the thing easily on Tuesday and not at all on Thursday, which leaves everyone, including you, confused.
This unevenness is one of the most misunderstood parts of the picture. Performance that depends on interest, energy, sleep and stress, rather than on ability, will swing, sometimes wildly. The good days prove the capability is there, which makes the bad days look like a choice. They are not.
Because the inconsistency looks like attitude or effort, the response is to demand more consistency, which misses the point. For a child it shows up as could do better; for an adult, as being unreliable. The variability itself is the signal.
We pay attention to the inconsistency, not just the average, because the swing is one of the clearest clues there is. None of this is a diagnosis. It is what we explore with you.
